we’re adding an addition

When we were looking at our house, one of the big things that stood out to us was that there weren’t too many closets and the closets we do have, we’re going to turn them both into bathrooms. So when we started thinking about how we were going to function and move through our house, I threw out the idea to enclose our small back porch and to turn it into a mud room. Our house is on a city lot, so we will park and enter through the back of our house 90% of the time. We wanted to make sure that when we entered we weren’t dragging dirty shoes and coats to our front foyer. And if I’m being completely honest, I’m an incredibly tidy person and a mess of coats, shoes, etc. right at the front of our house would drive me crazy.

The addition itself totals about 40 square feet. While pretty small, we feel that it will be the final element that allows our house to function as we need it to!

If you look at the new plan, you’ll see that we’ve chosen to swing the new door outwards. This is an atypical scenario, but with how small the interior room is, we think it will give us the extra space we need when entering the house. To make the space appear larger, we are also installing a full height on the right side, a door with a glass inset, and a mirror around the shelves that will be hung inside.

The left is our current plan for how the storage wall will get built out and the right two images are our inspiration. We haven’t thought about materiality yet, but it will likely also be very minimal and timeless. We don’t want to crowd this space. Let me know what you think or if you have any questions!
