exterior updates part one

Much like the inside of our house, the outside really needs some TLC. All of the paint is chipping, the gutters are so rusted out they are leaking, and the roof is about to spring a leak any minute. Aside from these functional details, our house also needs a little bit more of a masculine touch to dull down the dollhouse look from the scalloped wooden siding.

Overall the exterior has some really great bones, but with a few tweaks, we think we can make it something that really represents us as well as the house. The biggest change we are making is that we are painting all of the wood black. By painting the scalloped wood black, we’re hoping to tone it down a bit. Then a black roof, gutters, and windows will follow suit.

We’re also going to remove the storm door and replace the entry doors on the entire house with doors with a glass inset. If you notice on the front porch, the railings and newel posts were not meant to be here. They don’t actually cover the stairs and all of the stairs are different heights. We are going to rebuild all of this and install railings and newel posts that are more fitting with the style of the house. To add a little bit more warmth, we’d like to strip the beadboard on the porch ceiling and finish it in a medium wood tone. Then we’ll update all of the light fixtures and exterior door hardware with brass fixtures to give it a nod to the interior.
